MEETING LIAM // VLOG

For the finale of my documentary I wanted to discover what telling young men to ‘man up’ and suppress emotions has and how that impacts their lives. The statistics do not lie - in the UK men are three times more likely to kill themselves than women, this is shocking and I believe has everything to do with our society which states that to be manly you cannot look weak and feel emotions.

To explore the mental health side of my documentary I was hoping to interview someone who had strong opinions about the ‘man up culture’ which has come under fire in the past few months - this is where I stumbled across young musician and university student, Liam Casey. The power of social media is a wonderful, my friend showed me a tweet that had gone viral, the tweet was by Liam and it stated the following:

I reached out to Liam and arranged to drive up to meet him in Manchester, I wanted to discuss primarily what caused him to try and take his own life and his opinion on society and how it effects young mens mentality.

VLOG EXPLAINING WHY I WANTED TO INTERVIEW LIAM

POST FILMING UPDATE:

Speaking to Liam was a roaring success. After finding out Liam’s story, I was able to ask a whole host of questions which highlighted the issue of mental health among young men. It was really good also to speak to someone who has gone through similar situations to myself - I think this is testimony to the whole reason I started this project. Not enough men speak about there mental health and the pressure that society has put on us as men, finding someone who has gone through similar experiences is a healing process in itself and I hope to portray this on screen. Liam was a great guy and gave a fantastic heart felt interview. We spoke about how society forces young men to feel and how this has effected us growing up. The only problem was because we had so much to talk about its going to be hard to fit the conversation in the short time I have for this documentary.

Below is some extra content of the questions that I unfortunately couldn’t fit into the final cut.
