WHY ALPHA?

After spending the past 22 years scrutinising my own masculinity I decided it was time to scrutinise society. From the supposed male ‘bread winners’ of post war Britain to telling boys to not cry and to ‘man up’, society has played a massive role in constructing the rigid mold of what a man should be. This is something that I hope to break down by investigating and doing the one thing that most men aren’t very good at – talking about how they feel.

One of the biggest obstacles in managing insecurities and mental health is the fact that men are reluctant to talk about how they feel. From an early age, being in touch with emotions and expressing how you feel is considered by young boy’s peers to be ‘girly’.  This I feel has had an incredibly negative effect on both myself and other young men growing up and leads to many young men suffering in silence and developing a variety of problems. By not confiding in anyone and talking about how they feel, men are at risk of developing damaging mental health issues, problems forming meaningful relationships and in extreme cases suicidal thoughts.

For this documentary I am setting out to speak to a spectrum of different young men who’s appearances and mannerisms range from both stereotypically masculine to unconventional and feminine. I aim to engage with my interviewees in a raw and honest way in order to gain an understanding of how different men feel about growing up in a society that still holds onto gender bias. Join me as I embark on a journey of discovery and see whether or not my own insecurities are indeed valid and felt universally by young men in 2017.

This blog will be updated regularly with extra info and behind the scenes features – I look forward to sharing my journey with you all.
